Water And Dirt Act As A Grinding Compound Between The Seal Face And The Mating Surface Of The Spacer. Once The Grooves Are Deep Enough, The Sealing Surface Is Lost, Allowing Water And Dirt To Pass Through And Contaminate The Bearing.
